Unit: Freshwater and Our World
Grade Level: 3rd
Unit EQ: What is the relationship between humans, freshwater, and the environment?


These are the objectives for the unit
:
-  SWBAT distinguish between freshwater and saltwater.
-  SWBAT explain why clean useable freshwater is only a very small portion of the total water on the earth.
-  SWBAT state where useable freshwater comes from (surface water, groundwater, desalination).
-  SWBAT create a class world map (with a key) that shows the type of freshwater that cities around the world use.
-  SWBAT name many uses of freshwater in our society today. Broad examples include power, irrigation, industry, domestic use, water for livestock, and   
    aquaculture.
-  SWBAT conclude that water is essential to society.
-  SWBAT compare and contrast the amount of water that is required to produce different goods.
-  SWBAT find out that “The average American lifestyle is kept afloat by nearly  2,000 gallons of water a day—twice the global average” (National Geographic).

-  SWBAT state that a long time ago Madison did not have a public water system. 
-  SWBAT explain where the Madison Utility gets its water. 
-  SWBAT recognize threats to Madison’s water supply.
-  SWBAT use persuasion techniques to try to convince others to conserve and/or protect Madison’s groundwater. 

-  SWBAT think critically about how the media and advertisements influence behaviors, opinions, and decisions as evidenced by responses on worksheet and 
    discussions.  
-  SWBAT think about the pros and cons of bottled water as evidenced by the class discussions and debate.

-  SWBAT consider some of the problems that affect the world’s freshwater supply, including pollution, water-related diseases, global warming (drought), and overuse.
-  SWBAT propose ways that people can deal with these problems.
